Holiday Stress ; To Have or Have Not ?

During the busy holiday season, some stress can be a positive force as it can energize us to accomplish tasks. Of course we respond to stress differently and a situation that bothers you may not bother someone else but too much stress can harm you. How much is too much? Some symptoms that stress can cause:

  • Exhaustion
  • Poor Concentration
  • Difficulty Making Decisions
  • Headaches
  • Nervousness
  • Nausea
  • Stomach Upset
  • Mood swings

Holiday stress can be caused by the extra demands that happen around this time of year. It can be caused by financial concerns, family gatherings, relationships, loneliness, depression, work demands, and substance use during holiday celebrations. Some healthy ways of dealing with stress include getting plenty of rest, exercise, talking to a friend or people that support you, journaling, self care - what brings you pleasure, setting realistic goals and expectations, and laughter.
