When Anger Needs Management ...
/Anger is an important emotion. It provides us with information about ourselves: what triggers us, where we feel it in our bodies, and how do we use it. We can use anger to take action but if not handled appropriately, it can be very destructive to personal and professional relationships, and our health. Anger can lead to violence. It can deplete the satisfaction we get from life.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) offers clients the opportunity to manage their anger. Studies show CBT treatments have found to be an effective tool in treatment for anger problems ( Beck & Fernandez, 1998; Deffenbacher, 1996; Trafate, 1995).
CBT uses the following types of interventions:
Relaxation interventions, which target the effects of anger in our bodies
Cognitive Interventions, which target irrational beliefs and thoughts
Communication skills, which target aggressive behaviors and teach conflict resolution
Coping skills, which replace maladaptive behaviors
Groups and individual sessions can be the venue to work on personalized treatment plans to target one’s needs. Breaking the cycle of anger involves a client’s awareness and strategies to control their anger. Often the solution can begin by making an appointment with a professional.
